Paul Ryan Tries To Make Himself Look Reasonable By Supporting Gay Adoption

01 May News | Comments

Why is it when Republicans try to look progressive they always look so retro? Today’s case in point: Rep. Paul Ryan, the self-appointed financial wizard of the GOP and second-place Vice Presidential candidate.

Ryan has now boldly come out in favor of gay adoption–you know, the issue that was a hot topic a decade ago . Ryan voted in 1999 against allowing gay adoption in the District of Columbia, but now he says he’s sorry.

“I’d vote differently these days,” Ryan told a town hall audience in Wisconsin. “I do believe that if there are children who are orphans who do not have a loving person or couple … I think if a person wants to love and raise a child, they ought to be able to do that. Period.”

Mighty big of him. Of course, it would have meant a lot more 14 years ago when Ryan could have been ahead of the curve instead of way behind it. And we’re sure that the demographic tsunami about to annihilate the GOP had nothing to do with his change of heart.

The more interesting question is where this leaves Ryan with his church. As a devout Catholic, Ryan has now put himself at odds with the hierarchy, which has followed a scorched-earth policy in opposition of gay adoption.

Just to prove that he’s staying behind the times on the main issue of the day, Ryan reiterated his belief that “marriage is between a man and a woman.” We look forward to him recanting that idea in 2026.
